*Update: We’ve been advised by Carmi administration that as of this time there is no horse currently inside the city limits, contradicting our reporter’s understanding from a conversation earlier in the day. She tells us the specific reason for the discussion is chickens and pigs.
Original story with updates to reflect correction:
These are strange times indeed. It seems fitting that more unprecedented matters would be brought to light. The next Carmi City Council meeting planned for Tuesday, July 21st could potentially involve some figurative horseplay. As explained to WROY/WRUL News, a citizen has allegedly expressed interest in bringing a horse into the city limits, which would an obvious issue with at least a couple ordinances, namely #918 and #1199 which deal with regulating nuisances and livestock respectively. To complicate matters, we were told the owner of the equine describes it as an emotional support animal, a fresh wrinkle to a once simple matter. Since our original version of this story appeared, we have since been notified by Carmi administration that the specific reason for the planned discussion at the upcoming Tuesday meeting however is chickens and pigs. Discussion on that front will probably soak up most of the focus at the meeting with the only other action item being authorization to seek bids for the sale of excess property, specifically a 1997 Ford F800 370 V8 Dump Truck with 50,872 miles to be sold as is. Carmi City Council meets routinely the first and third Tuesday of the month at 5:30pm. The public is welcome at City Council meetings, held at Council Chambers on East Main Street behind the Light and Water building. Per Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s order, masks are required for all attendees.
