In Gallatin County Court on Monday, 50 year old Christopher D. Smith of Morganfield, Kentucky pled guilty to a charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. Smith admitted to having sex with a minor child in May 2006. The charges against him were filed in December.
As part of the plea agreement, Smith will serve 85% of his eight year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections and will be under mandatory supervised release for a period of three years to life. Smith also has to register as a child sexual predator.
The case was investigated by Illinois State Police Zone 7 Investigations, the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department, and the Shawneetown Police Department. States Attorney Douglas Dyhrkopp thanked all the law enforcement officers who worked together to bring the case to resolution without the need for a trial.
