Memorial Day Ceremony

Memorial Day

It’s back to work and normal routines today, following the three day Memorial Day weekend.

While the weekend found many folks gathering for family barbecues, alumni gatherings and other activities, many found time to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony held at Veteran’s Park in downtown Carmi Monday morning.

The ceremony included a keynote address from Voice of Democracy winner Collin Sexton, along with the traditional laying of the wreaths by the American Legion/VFW, DAR and Legion Auxiliary.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional three volleys, often mistakenly called a 21 gun salute and taps, played by Michael Croghan and Steve Bell, who also played the National Anthem at the opening of the ceremony.

Carmi Mayor Jeff Pollard offered opening remarks.

Roscoe Templeton led the opening and closing prayers for the ceremony. Whip Wilson of the 40 and 8 led the pledge of allegiance.

The special ceremony was sponsored by the Carmi VFW and American Legion posts.
