Dominant 1st Half moves Dawgs to 2-0

The Carmi-White County Bulldogs welcomed in the Vienna-Goreville Eagles for their first home contest of the 2022 football season, and it was all Bulldogs from start to finish.

After a 46-6 route of Hamiton County in week 1, the Bulldogs picked up where they left off against the Eagles. After a Vienna-Goreville punt that was downed on the CWC 2 yard line, Carmi drove 98 yards in 6 plays, capped off by a 23-yard touchdown run by Draxtyn Aud. Mitchell Edwards would hit the extra point kick to make it a 7-0 CWC lead with 5:26 to go in the 1st.

After a Vienna-Goreville three-and-out, the Bulldogs again would drive right down the field, this time capping it off with a 40-yard touchdown run by Isaac King to make it a 13-0 ballgame after 1 quarter of play.

Another Eagle punt gave CWC great field position, and they would take advantage as Warren Legg would find Aud for a 28-yard catch and run for a touchdown on the first play of the 2nd quarter, 19-0 Bulldogs.

Next Eagles possession would be cut short as junior defensive back, Trayton Vickers would intercept a pass and run it back 56 yards all the way to the Vienna-Goreville 4 yard line. King would run it in on the next play, 27-0 Bulldogs with 10:35 to go in the half.

Aud was far from done on the evening, a Landon Driscoll interception would again set up CWC with great field possession, and Aud would find the end-zone shortly after from 30 yards out. Bulldogs then led 35-0.

Carmi would get two more scores before the end of the half. Andrew Dodgson would run one in from 52 yards out, and Aud would score his 4th touchdown on the night, this time from 8 yards out. Vienna would score with 97 seconds left in the 2nd quarter, CWC led 50-6 at intermission.

The opening kickoff of the 2nd half would be picked up by CWC Branten Stockton, and he took it 70 yards to the house, and that was the nail in the coffin. That put the Bulldogs up 58-6, and they would go on to win by that score.

“The whole focus for us this week was going down to the end of College Blvd and getting better,” said CWC head coach Kurt Simon. “They (Vienna) didn’t have a team last year, so we knew potentially it could be this type of a game. We did what we were supposed to do.”

Next up for CWC, their toughest opponent yet, the Sesser-Valier Red Devils. Sesser defeated Fairfield on Friday 15-12, moving the Red Devils to 2-0 on the year. Carmi has not defeated Sesser in 8 years, 2014 was the last time (Jordan Large, John Lamp, Logan Weller, Tyson Russell, Logan Deig and others were seniors that year).
