Sheriff’s Department arrests Mt. Carmel man in Crossville after short standoff

koons jason 4-21-16The White County Sheriff’s Department arrested 36 year old Jason Koons of Mt. Carmel on warrants out of White and Edwards Counties as well as several other charges after it was discovered he was hiding out in an apartment in Crossville.

Sheriff Maier was informed of Koons’s location at 9:42am and he and two deputies arrived at the Rudolph St address shortly after.  Contact was made with the occupant of the apartment, Tara Fitzgerald, who after agreeing to exit the residence yelled that Koons had a gun.  Later, Fitzgerald told deputies that Koons had threatened to commit suicide or harm officers in an attempt to avoid returning to jail.

Soon after Fitzgerald exited the apartment, Koons also exited the residence and attempted to flee the responding officers. After a brief struggle, Koons was taken into custody and transported to the White County Jail.

During a consent search of the apartment, officers discovered two loaded handguns, multiple hypodermic syringes, one containing a liquid, other drug paraphernalia, and five capsules of suspected heroin.

Koons is being held without bail at the Jail.  In addition to the warrants he was sought for, Koons has been charged with Possession of a controlled substance, possession of hypodermic syringes, unlawful possession of firearms, unlawful restraint, and resisting a peace officer.  States Attorney Denton Aud is reviewing the case.
