Carmi Men Sentenced to Prison

Two Carmi men will be spending time in an Illinois Department of Corrections Facility following their sentencing in White County Court Monday.

According to State’s Attorney Denton Aud, 35 year old Benjamin J. Smith was sentenced to 42 months in prison on a charge of delivery of methamphetamine, a class 2 felony. Smith will also have to serve two years mandatory supervised release.

Smith’s case was investigated by the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force.

Jedediah D. Burnett, 41, of Carmi was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to serve four years supervised release on a charge of aggravated domestic battery, a class 2 felony. Burnett received the same sentence on a violation of order of protection, a class 4 felony.

Burnett was on probation for the aggravated domestic battery charge, when he violated the order of protection. His probation was revoked and he was sentenced on both charges. Burnett will have to serve a minimum of 85% of the aggravated domestic battery sentence.

Carmi Police Department was the investigating agency in both the Burnett cases.
