Carmi City Council Recap – April 20

The Carmi City Council met Tuesday night in regular session.  Jeremy Smith was there and covered the meeting for WROY/WRUL News.  He provides the following story.

The council heard from Chamber of Commerce Director Kelly Northcott to ask for a donation for this year’s 4th of July Fireworks. Northcott reports, she has been contacted by the vendor requesting an earlier commitment due to the fact that only two Chinese Ports are currently open to service the delivery; resulting in slower delivery times. In previous years the city has donated $9,000 towards the fireworks display, with the remaining cost covered by local businesses. In the event of weather or pandemic cancelation only $800 would be lost, and the event can be canceled any time prior to Mid-June. The city unanimously approved to donate $9,000 to this year’s display, which is slated to take place at the Fairgrounds 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 4th.

Additionally, the Mayor reports the city received a check in the mail last week from the family of Bill G. Harmon. The card from Linda Harmon Wright and Debbie Harmon Porter stated they were following the wishes of their deceased father who passed away August 6th, 2019. He had requested they send the City of Carmi a check in the amount of $5,000 in his memory. The money has been used to order three picnic tables (two regular and one handicap) and benches for the new Downtown Theater Park. The purchase will honor his memory on the park sign.

The next Carmi City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4th.
