In an effort to help the public make informed decisions in the upcoming Consolidated Election April 4th, we at WROY/WRUL News asked candidates in the contested races for the City of Carmi to fill out a short questionnaire.
Mike Baxley
Carmi Township Trustee
- Tell us a little about yourself.
My family has lived in White County dating back to the 1850’s. I graduated from Carmi/White County High School in 2002 and then joined the Marine Corps in 2003 to serve my Country in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I spent 3 years overseas which included deployments to Okinawa Japan as well as a combat deployment in Fallujah, Iraq.
Since returning home to Carmi, I have ventured into small business and am currently enrolled at Southern Illinois University to complete my Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
I have been a dedicated member of the White County VFW Post # 3851 since 2008, where I have held active positions such as Quartermaster, and currently Senior-Vice Commander. I am very proud of the fact that I, along with others, have brought the VFW into solid financial standing over the last few years. I am very passionate about serving Veterans and their causes.
- Why do you want to serve?
I would now appreciate the chance to serve my community as Trustee. I have conservative ideals and feel that I could bring a new perspective to township government. I would always have the taxpayers’ best interest in mind.
- What are the biggest issues you see facing your desired position? How do you plan to address these issues?
The biggest issue the townships throughout Illinois face is the potential phasing out of township government. At the state level, this is a recurring issue that has been addressed. Township government is beneficial for the maintenance of township roads, for assistance for those in need, property assessments, and cemeteries. We need to operate as efficiently as possible and achieve these goals by working together to insure the taxpayers’ dollars are being spent wisely and responsibly.
- What sets you apart from the other candidates? Why should voters choose you on April 4th?
I can’t speak for the other candidates as to how we differ, only that I have a sincere interest in being of service to my home community.
