James Robert Layton, 90, of Crossville, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at Wabash Senior Living and Rehabilitation . He was born on Friday, June 8, 1934, in Fairfield, the son of James S. and Flora E. (Skelton) Layton. He first married Patsy Irene Burris on July 3, 1959, in Carmi and together they shared 12 years of marriage before her passing on July 8, 1971. He then married Martha Sue (Hargrave) Wilson on May 11, 1973, in Crossville and they have shared over 52 years of marriage.
Bob was a 1952 graduate of Crossville High School from there he went on to honorably served his country in the United States Army. Bob retired from Whirlpool as an electrician. Bob was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Burnt Prairie and also attended Crossville Missionary Baptist Church. He enjoyed the annual Crossville Alumni reunion where he often was in charge of brewing the coffee and he also worked alongside members of the Crossville Rotary Club in their various community activities.
Bob enjoyed gardening and loved to spend time with his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, caring father, and wonderful grandfather. Bob was also a kind and helpful friend and neighbor. His number one priority in life was to know and make known Jesus, Bob loved reading and studying the Bible both alone and with others and was never ashamed to share his faith in Jesus or the truth of God's word. Bob was loved by many and will be missed dearly.
In addition to his wife Martha Sue Layton of Crossville, Bob is survived by his children and their spouses, Jamie and Pam Layton of Branson, MO, Susan and George Spencer of Crossville and Glen and Missy Wilson of Mt. Carmel; grandchildren and their spouses, Zachary and Ashley Layton of Yukon, OK, Justin and Monica Spencer of Carmi, Amanda and Kurt Bridgewater of Crossville, Jordan and Jenny Spencer of Crosville, Jacob and Ashley Shiever of Dallas, TX, Joshua and Jessica Shiever of Grayville, Samuel Wilson of Edinboro, PA and Isaac Wilson of Mt. Carmel, great-grandchildren, Brycen, Jayci, Bri Ellen, Nathan, Cayson and Conner.
Along with his first wife Patsy Irene Layton, Bob was preceded is death by his parents and a daughter, Toni Sue Layton.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025,in the chapel at Roberts and Cook Funeral Service, 108 West Main Street, Crossville, Illinois, with Nick Roberts officiating. Burial will follow immediately at Little Wabash Cemetery in Crossville. Family and friends may visit from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. In Lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions in Bob's memory be made to the White County Senior Citizens Center or the Crossville Missionary Baptist Keenager Luncheon. The contributions will be accepted by Roberts and Cook Funeral Service who has been entrusted with the arrangements.
