Vernon, IL – In support of United Way’s Education Initiative, UWSCI has received a grant in the amount of $6,400.00 from Healing Illinois to benefit many school libraries throughout our region. Healing Illinois is a racial healing initiative of the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), in partnership with The Chicago Community Trust, designed to distribute $4.5 million grants to organizations across the state to begin, or continue, the work of racial healing. The grant was facilitated by the Southern Illinois Community Foundation.United Way’s literacy initiative is to promote a sense of community and passion for reading of all ages. This grant is a perfect continuation of the United Way of South Central Illinois’ Dolly Parton Imagination Library. It is our hope that these books will promote dialogue and facilitate learning in areas of racism and racial equity.Checks in the amount of $400 was distributed to the following Libraries: Woodlawn Grade SchoolWaltonville Grade School Library Summersville Grade School McClellan School #12 Grand Prairie Library Field #3 School Library Farrington School Library Mt.
