State Unemployment Holds Flat for May; County by County Numbers Due Next Week

We’ll get a better look at unemployment numbers on a county by county basis next Thursday, but statewide information released Thursday afternoon shows the rate for Illinois remains unchaged for May at 7.1%.  Non farm payrolls were down almost 8,000 for the month based on preliminary data.  The April monthly change was revised, up slightly from +300 to +1,600 jobs.  The three industry sectors with the largest monthly gains included Leisure and Hospitality, Manufacturing, and Educational and Health Services.  Declines were seen in Government, Construction, and Financial Activity sectors.  Illinois remains with a significantly higher unemployment rate than the rest of the nation which sits at 5.8%.  May of 2020’s unemployment rate however was at 15.4%.
