Saturday night shooting in Mt. Carmel now believed to be self-inflicted

Mt. Carmel Police now believe that Saturday night’s shooting at 214 N. Walnut Street was self inflicted.

At 10:15 pm Saturday, Mt. Carmel Police responded to a report of a 24 year old man with a gunshot wound to the chest.  The unidentified victim was transported to Wabash General Hospital, and later was transferred to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Evansville.

The incident was originally investigated as a possible robbery, but evidence collected at the scene, including the weapon used, now lead investigators to believe that the gunshot was self inflicted.

Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services assisted Mt. Carmel Police at the scene.  The victim is expected to make a full recovery.
