Police Arrest Teen for Theft of a Vehicle
Carmi Police, Illinois State Police and the White County Sheriff’s Department were all involved in the apprehension of a Carmi teenager after he allegedly stole a Jeep Cherokee from Robert Shaffer of 705 Smith Street, Carmi.
According to the incident report, Shaffer called 911 to report someone had just stolen his jeep from his driveway. Shaffer made that call around 8:25 Tuesday night. At the same time, an Illinois State Police trooper was nearly struck by a vehicle driving with no lights and in the wrong lane of Highway 14. The trooper stopped the driver, west of town, and after hearing the radio traffic about the theft, he called for backup. Carmi officers and a White County Sheriff Deputy responded to the scene and placed Austin L. Cartmill, 18 of 704 Sixth Street under arrest.
Cartmill is facing charges of theft over $500, theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, obstructing identification and no valid driver’s license. He remained in custody early Wednesday morning.
Earlier in the day, Carmi Police arrested Elijah James, 28, 702 Foley Drive, Carmi on outstanding White County warrants for aggravated assault and disorderly conduct. Bond was set at $150. That arrest was made just before 4 Tuesday afternoon.James remained in custody early Wednesday.
Local authorities also arrested Jennifer R. Parkhurst, 31, of 412 Oak Street, Carmi on a charge of retail theft, following an incident at Wal-Mart Tuesday afternoon. Parkhurst’s bond was set at $150, and she also remained in custody Wednesday morning.
