HARRISBURG, Ill. – State Rep. Brandon Phelps, D-Harrisburg, visited local schools in his district in order meet with students, teachers and administrators to discuss some of the issues in Springfield related to funding for public schools in Southern Illinois.
“Education is absolutely vital for the future of our children and it is important that I know what is going on in order to best represent them in Springfield,” Phelps said. “There are so many hardworking students and teachers in Southern Illinois that are concerned with education funding and I want them to know that I am here fighting for them.”
Recently, Governor Rauner and other legislators in Springfield have discussed plans to bailout Chicago Public Schools due to the financial mismanagement of the Chicago Board of Education. The plan would take taxpayer dollars from across the state and direct funding toward Chicago. Phelps is standing strongly against this plan and has created a petition opposing such legislation. He encourages residents who are interested to add their name to the petition by contacting his district office.
“It is not right for Southern Illinois tax dollars to be going to Chicago and their students because they cannot balance a checkbook,” Phelps said. “Our students are just as important as theirs. That’s why I’m encouraging resident to join me in this fight by adding their name to my petition against a Chicago School Bailout.”
