Freak Accident on Interstate 64
While there were no injuries, a crash on Interstate 64, just east of Mile Marker 103 in Wayne County was like no other crash observed by most law enforcement officers in the area.
Shortly before 6:30 Wednesday morning, Michael E. Willie, 52, of Peoria, Illinois was westbound on Interstate 64 in a 1994 Mack dump truck, when the dump bed raised and he struck the Wayne County Road 1200 East overpass. Following the impact, the dump bed separated from the truck’s chassis and remained lodged under the overpass.
Rick’s Towing removed the vehicle from the crash site. The highway was closed for a short time, while the dump bed was removed from under the overpass.
Bridge inspectors from Illinois Department of Transportation were called to the site to inspect the bridge for damage, that also limited traffic to one lane of travel as the overpass assessment was completed.
Willie, who was not injured in the accident was cited for vehicle over height, no valid registration and overweight on registration.
Illinois State Police, who responded to the crash, were assisted by ISP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer, IDOT, Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Wayne City Fire Department and Rick’s Towing service.
