Extreme Heat Could Cause Pavement Blowouts; Motorists Asked to Be Cautious

With extreme heat the lead story in most area newscasts, IDOT says motorists should be on the lookout for buckling pavement on roadways.  Blowouts occur when prolonged high temperatures cause the road to expand and buckle resulting in uneven driving surfaces.  Precipitation and humidity increase the potential for such breakdowns.  And while it’s impossible to predict where or when a pavement blow out will happen, IDOT says crews are monitoring the situation and will be ready to respond.  If you notice buckling or stress in a roadway, you can report it to the Department of Transportation by calling toll free 1-800-452-4368.
