Crossville Trustees Approve Structure Permits, Fire Dept Door; Mayor Warns Against Flippant Bill Payers

Expect a couple new structures in Crossville.  Leaders approved Joe Abrahamson and Kim Brandon for building permits Tuesday night at the Village Board meeting.  Abrahamson’s approval is for 203 West Davenport and gives him permission to place a 12/20 yard barn on the property.  Brandon’s approval is for a portable storage building at 813 North State.  Both permits were approved unanimously.

If it works out, Crossville’s getting a great deal on a new fire department door.  Trustees were apprehensive a bid of $675 amounted to the correct product and up to specs with the next lowest bid nearly double that.  Mayor Henry Feldmann said with approval, officials would call and move forward with that bid only if it was the correct product.  Trustees consented.

Also Tuesday night, the mayor indicated the village had enough mosquito spray on hand for maybe three or four applications.  He says the company has increased the price on spray by 25% which amounts to $4,000 for 10 gallons of concentrate.  Trustees decided to table the purchase of more while Feldmann does some further negotiating.

Not up for negotiation according to the mayor is residents putting off paying their bills on time and then wanting workers to turn utilities back on immediately as soon as they do pay their bill.

When it’s time for people to pay their bills, you basically have 45 days to pay your bill from one month to the next.  When we shut you off, we’re not gonna pay the guys time and a half to go out after 4:30 to turn you back on cause you didn’t pay your bill on time.  We’re not doing that.  It’s very silly to do that.  So when people get mad because we shut ‘em off, it’s…this has been a policy that’s been in play for probably 30 years.  It’s nothing new.  So if people don’t like it, it’s just the way it is.  We do, we have in the past worked with people that something happened, a hardship case comes up or they have a bunch of bad luck come up, we have worked with people.  But, we can’t make it the policy of going out and turning people back on just whenever you feel like paying your bill.  You have to wait until the next working day.

Crossville’s audit was done by Arlynne Davis of Botsch and Associates and everything looked good according to the mayor.  Finally, trustees agreed to a certificate of authority, necessary through the State of Illinois allowing Crossville to get rock salt for the next winter season.

With no executive session, the board meeting adjourned after 22 minutes at 6:52pm.
