Crossville Leaders Talk July 5th Celebration, Dog Catcher, and ATV Permitting

WROY/WRUL News Reporter Landen Elliott assisted with the story.

Saturday, July 5th in Crossville is shaping up to be a destination for fun.  New Park Committee Chairwoman Nancy Osborne has details on what to expect for the holiday.

We’ll have a pickleball tournament…we’re in the works for a softball tournament.  Possibly a kickball tournament and cornhole tournament and a 50/50 drawing.  We’re trying to do food trucks.  Cheyenne already has 5th Street’s food truck and Amy Lou’s Brews booked.

Leaders expect the prices of fireworks have gone up and were approved to go buy up to $8,500 worth of fireworks.  That’s a thousand dollars more than the village spent last year and doesn’t include the one-day insurance policy that typically runs about $1,000.

Also Tuesday night in Crossville, Mayor Rick Kuykendall says the village has received one application for the dog catcher position.  He says one person has applied.

They seem like they’re pretty interested in that.  That person does not hold a permanent job.  They’re around town all the time.  So, I feel like, if the board feels like this, let’s maybe wait until the next board meeting on June 10th to see if anybody else applies for that.  Then we’ll make a decision on what to do on that front if everybody’s ok with that.

The mayor also brought up ATV permitting throughout the village.

I’ve researched that.  That can be done in the state of Illinois.  I’ve had several people approach me about 4 wheelers saying why can’t we buy a license, why can we not insure these or treat them like a motorcycle is treated.

From there, discussion split between so called “responsible” and “irresponsible” residents prompting police officer Mark Wheeler to add his two cents.

The problem we run into as law enforcement is they’ll run across the field whereas a golf cart can’t.  The side by sides are usually so big, they’re like a car so they don’t do it either.  That’s what we run into on my end.  But if you guys want ‘em, that’s your business.  I’ll do whatever you guys say.

Several trustees agreed it wasn’t a good idea and there was no motion to move forward on the matter.  Leaders recessed into executive session at 6:48pm.  After returning, Mark Wheeler was appointed as Police Chief and a building permit was granted for Tennille Browning who plans to install a fence on property.  Village Clerk Selena Harrell tells us a contingent of residents also spoke out with concerns over speeding through city streets during the post executive session portion of the meeting.  She says they were asking for more police coverage, which leaders say they’ll take under advisement.  The meeting adjourned at 7:39pm.
