Black & Smith To Lead New Era of CWC Baseball and Softball

After successful 2024 campaigns, both the Carmi-White County Baseball and Softball teams were looking for new head coaches after the resignations of Justin Simmons and Kaylea Stubblefield.

In last month’s CWC Unit 5 School Board meeting, the board approved the next leaders of the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs on the diamond, Travis Black and Julia Smith.

Black, a 2018 CWCHS graduate, has been heavily involved in CWC athletics since being hired as a High School Science Teacher in 2023. Black is currently the Jr. High Baseball and 8th Grade Boys Basketball Head Coach, and he spent the last two seasons assisting Simmons at the high school level. Black has also served as a color commentator for WRUL Sports since 2022. Black was a two-year varsity starter in basketball, and a three-year varsity starter in baseball during his high school career.

Smith, a 2019 CWCHS graduate, is in her first year teaching Math at CWCHS. Along with coaching softball, Smith is also an assistant coach for the CWC Girls Basketball team. Smith was a standout three-sport athlete in her time at CWCHS, excelling at volleyball, basketball, and softball, earning herself a scholarship to play softball at Lincoln Trail College.

At 24 years old, Black and Smith are the youngest Carmi-White County varsity coaches since Chris Courty was hired as Girls Track Head Coach at 24 years old in 1992.
