A Long Meeting for Enfield With Little Results

The Enfield Village Board met for about two hours and 45 minutes Tuesday night with a lot on the agenda, but not a lot of action taken. Approximately 25 people attended the meeting with many of them inquiring about what is happening with the Enfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. Scott Mareing was there and has this report…

Mayor Maurie Black and all the board members said that they have no idea what is going on with Enfield Rehab, just that there have been lots of rumors.

They had hoped to have a new board member to replace Stephen Griffin but have not been able to yet.  Mayor Black said he is still looking and said that anyone interested should come talk to him.

The positions of Village Utility Worker, Animal Control Officer, Janitor for the Community Center, or full-time policeman have yet to be filled.  There will be an interview for a utility worker with the Mayor on Friday.  No candidates for Animal Control have come forward and Trustee Jim Bolin wanted the public to know that no matter what they’ve heard, he said they do want to find a replacement and that the salary is $200 a month.  They are still looking for a janitor and you should see the Mayor if interested.  And the Mayor said he will have an interview shortly with a potential candidate for the police officer position.

White County Sheriff Jordan Weiss was at the meeting and told the board that since they don’t have a police officer, that someone from his department will come to the area and check around.  He also wanted the board to know that the County is now giving out e-citations instead of hand written tickets to law violators.

Still no help from Ameren on the area that needs street lighting. Work might have to be done by the village itself, but that may be costly.

They are looking into purchasing Christmas lights.

The Sewer grant study is still ongoing.

The village is still waiting on that new truck they purchased, as it should be in this month.

They’re still getting estimates on Community Center repairs.

The person that wanted to purchase the 20 acres behind the park offered $60,000 for it and the village rescinded the stipulation that they would retain mineral rights.  But a motion to accept the offer died due to the lack of a second.  The village owns the deed to the property.

The village has the grant money for updating the restrooms at the park and will bring in a contractor to see what work needs to be done.

John Roberts the Third of Red Neck Wrestling addressed the board about holding wrestling shows in Enfield.  He has insurance and all the equipment needed to put on a show.  He holds events in Sims and many other towns in Southern Illinois.  The board agreed to give him a four show tryout and he’ll announce a first show date soon.

A list of properties in town that need to be cleaned up or mowed has been compiled.  Letters will be sent out to the owners requesting they do the work.

There were several minutes of discussion about possible events to hold during the Fourth of July Celebration or any other time during the summer months.

The board approved the proposal and the resolution to accept the lowest price in MFT funds from Mt. Carmel Sand and Gravel.  The resolution now has to be sent back to the state.

Also approved was the annual subscription from Neptune Software to read meters and hardware maintenance in the amount of $1,786.73.

There will be a special meeting held on Friday at 6:30 PM with a public hearing at 6 PM, pending approval from the village attorney,  on a proposed ordinance for designation of the area on the north end of town, to build a playground there.  The reason for a special meeting is that the item was mistakenly not put on the agenda for this meeting.

The board adjourned at 8:46 PM.
