White County Treasurer Mike Baxley is offering some context in light of the recent truth in taxation hearing and subsequent passage of an increase in property taxes by the White County Board. In a social media post, Baxley says, “The significant reduction in revenues was reported in the monthly June 2025 board meeting and was reported by Rice and Sullivan, which is our external auditor.
The main reduction was from prisoner keep (due to Safe T act) and with the reduction of replacement tax which comes from the state of Illinois.”
Baxley says none of those reductions are anyone’s fault and while some additional revenues including those from cannabis, interest income, and dispatch have softened the blow to the revenue deficit, they didn’t resolve the problem entirely.
He’d go on to say there is no missing money, just a reduction of revenues and noted that Illinois is home to the highest property taxes in the nation.
