SHAWNEE NATIONAL FOREST TO CONDUCT MORE PRESCRIBED BURNS

The U.S. Forest Service, Shawnee National Forest plans to conduct more prescribed burns this week beginning Tuesday March 29th, weather permitting. The size of each prescribed burn varies and people nearby may not notice smoke coming from these burns. The general location of each prescribed burn is listed below:

* Northeast of Simpson in Johnson and Pope Counties (about 600 acres)

* Five miles southwest of Jonesboro in Union County (about 1700 acres)

Fire personnel will carefully monitor smoke being generated during the prescribed burn. Members of the public can expect the bulk of smoke to be visible in mid-afternoon and dissipate late in the afternoon. Smoke will likely be most noticeable around the nearby communities.
