A retired Wayne County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a single vehicle motorcycle accident Tuesday afternoon according to White County Sheriff Doug Maier.
Around 12:15 pm, Don Atwood of Wayne City was riding on Route 1 south of Norris City when he failed to navigate a curve and was thrown from his motorcycle. Atwood was flown from the scene to Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado, where he was pronounced deceased.
Sheriff Maier also announced that a Norris City man suffered an accidental gunshot wound at his home on Sunday. 80 year old William Long told deputies that he was carrying the gun when he fell, and the weapon discharged, striking him in the stomach. Long was transported to Ferrell Hospital, who reported the shooting, by private vehicle. Long is reportedly in stable condition.
