TEUTOPOLIS…State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) re-confirmed today that he is opposed to a legislative proposal that would impose a 1 percent tax on Illinois gun owners when they purchase ammunition. The bill has been assigned to the Sales, Amusement, & Other Taxes Subcommittee of the Revenue & Finance Committee. You may watch the proceedings live on line at www.ilga.gov Virtual Room 3.
“This is yet another tax proposal coming out of Chicago to try to influence and hamper the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Illinois citizens,” commented Rep. Adam Niemerg. “I think we need to remember the quote by former President Ronald Reagan that:“Government does not tax to get the money it needs; government always finds a need for the money it gets.”
Under the proposed House Bill 238, any ammunition sold in Illinois would have an additional 1% surcharge tacked onto the sale price after adding on existing taxes and fees. The proponents claim that the money would be directed to a Trauma Response Fund, an account that would be distributed to public school districts to help pay for a new state-mandated program to prepare for mass trauma events.
