The Norris City Village Board met Tuesday night for its regular monthly meeting due to Monday being Labor Day. Scott Mareing was at the less than one hour meeting and has this report…
A Public Hearing was held 15 minutes prior to the regular meeting, with Angela Peyton making a presentation to the board to make the Beaty Field bathrooms ADA accessible with an OSLAD grant. The board gave her permission to pursue the grant.
A resident inquired into how the TIF District works, a map of the district, who are the people who pay into it, and if the board members have to reside within the district to vote on it. Mayor Skip Land and the board gave him the information he requested.
Brian May, owner of Wonder Market, said he noticed that replacing the 1% state grocery sales tax that will be repealed on January 1st, 2026, was on the agenda. He implored the board not to replace it with one of their own, saying even though it’s not much money to some, the people are being taxed too much as it is. Mayor Land said he agreed and he personally was against replacing it, but that it was up to the full board to decide. The board agreed to table the matter until next month’s meeting so more discussion can take place.
The roofs on the Chamber of Commerce building and the Museum are both leaking. There have been several bids received but they are looking for a few more before they decide who to choose.
The Agreement between the Township and the Village was finalized.
An audit of finances will take place.
The board approved allowing the American Legion to remain open half an hour later than normal for Dairy Day..
It was decided against upgrading the Utility Billing software.
The village is one police officer short and they are now accepting applications.
There was no Animal Control report as everything is going well.
And the board agreed to donate $1,000 each to Dairy Day and to White County CEO.
Board member Joe Skaggs said that after the school shooting in Minneapolis, he feels good knowing Norris City schools have school resource officers.
Mayor Skip Land will be out of town in early October, so Board member Larry Garlick will be Mayor Pro Tem at next month’s meeting.
The board adjourned at 7:52 PM. The next village board meeting will be on October 6th at 7 PM.
