Mystery Sign on Rural White County Road
The White County Highway Department has been busy the past several weeks replacing road markers throughout the county.
It was reported at the October County Board meeting, that a number of the signs have been replaced with most of that project complete in Carmi Township. County Engineer Brian Ray reported that while the county crews have been busy with the project they have received help from the township road commissioners.
While the road signs were purchased to replace damaged and missing signs, there is a mystery addition to one of the new poles at the intersection of 1925 North and 1125 East, the Centerville Blacktop. The sign simply states Maynard’s Corner.
It’s been a question on the minds of many residents who pass that sign on a daily basis. Inquiries made by WROY/WRUL have not resulted in a sufficient answer, so we are turning to the public. If you know, who Maynard is and why this is his corner, let us know. We tried to ask Dobie Gillis, but that didn’t work. For those too young to understand that, Maynard was Dobie’s beatnik friend on the television show, Dobie Gillis. Maynard was played by Bob Denver, who also played Gilligan.
