
The McLeansboro City Council met Tuesday night for its regular monthly meeting for a little over an hour. Scott Mareing was there and has the report.
The board approved an ordinance implementing a municipal grocery retailers’ occupation tax and a municipal grocery service occupation tax. It replaces the state’s 1% grocery tax that was repealed last year.
There was first reading of an ordinance regarding changes to appointed offices with changes in language. Passage is possible at next month’s meeting.
Zoning Administrator Pat Stevens discussed changing the zoning classification at Hyatt’s Addition to allow the placement of modular homes or trailers there. Nothing is being decided on as of yet.
Action on a job description for the Comptroller was tabled until next month’s meeting as there are still ongoing discussions.
The Consent Agenda was approved, which included that City Fireworks will take place at Lake McLeansboro on Friday, July 4th at dusk, with a rain date of Saturday, July 5th at dusk. There was $9,500 budgeted for fireworks, but the since the cost has gone up to $9,761, a FY26 Budget Amendment was approved to cover the rest of the cost. Also approved was the closing of the City Pool for the Fourth of July, Mayoral appointments for FY26 will not include a Fire Chief for now, and there was approval of a resolution using MFT funds for road maintenance this summer under the Illinois Highway Code.
Jeff Lueke donated $500 to the Fire Department.
The IEPA did a sewer inspection and determined that everything was in compliance. They’ll check back in five years.
The board went into executive session for about 40 minutes and said that the City Administrator’s contract runs retroactively from May 1st of this year until April 30th 2026. There will be a salary adjustment that begins with the next pay period this month.
