Local Veterans to take Honor Flight May 2nd; Letters Encouraged

The 20th Honor Flight out of Evansville is coming up on May 2nd.  On it will be Carmi’s own Ray Smith.  Carmi Kiwanis President Luke Sailer announced Smith has been chosen for the military Honor Flight to Washington D.C.  Smith, a 25-year Legion of Honor member of Kiwanis, served in the Army Veterinary Corp and was stationed in the nation’s capital in the early 1960’s.

Since 2014, Honor Flights of Southern Indiana has flown just under 1,500 veterans to D.C. The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization with the sole purpose to honor America’s Veterans for their sacrifice.

On May 2nd, Smith and others (including David K. Smith, also of Carmi) will leave early in the morning.  Once they arrive, they’ll visit several memorials mid to late morning, enjoy lunch, take a bus tour of the National Mall, visit the Korea, Lincoln, and Vietnam Memorials, stop by Arlington National Cemetery and see the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, and they’ll be back in Evansville for a Welcome Home Parade which is expected to start at 8:30pm.

The public is encouraged and welcome to write letters thanking Tri-State veterans for their service and attend the parade.  Anyone wanting to write a letter specific to Mr. Smith can do so.  Time is a factor and the envelope must be addressed in a specific manner.  Letters should be addressed to Operation Mail Call, HFSI-EVV20, PO Box 8234, Evansville, IN 47716.  Below that, write out Arnold Ray Smith and underneath that Blue.  You can also address mail to David K. Smith and put Gold underneath his name.
