Kiwanis Hear From the Guardian Center

The Guardian Center and Corn Day Logo

Katelyne Wolff, President of Carmi Kiwanis, unveiled the initial rendition of this year’s logo for Corn Day themed – Once Upon a Time. It features a magic mirror topped with an ear of corn and a fantasy castle.

The program for the March 21, 2019 meeting was presented by Sheryl Woodham, Executive Director of the Guardian Center. The Center will host this year’s Spring Banquet on Friday, April 12, 2019. The doors open at 5:15 pm, with dinner served at 6:00 pm. Tickets are available by calling (618) 382-8247 or you can visit their website at www.theguardiancenter.org. Ticket prices are $30 per person or $240 for a table of 8. The price includes dinner and a night of entertainment.

This year, Illusionist/Comedian Mike Bliss will perform. Mike has been a performer for the past 25 years at venues including the World Famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, CA, Cancun, Honolulu, Tahiti and even headlined his own show in Branson, MO. His Branson show was voted “Branson’s Specialty Act of the Year”. He has been featured on Fox’s 30 Seconds to Fame and NBC’s America’s Got Talent.

The Banquet will also feature a silent auction, a live auction and a can raffle. This event is the largest fund raiser that the Guardian Center holds each year. They rely upon funding from the State of Illinois, several grants from different agencies and groups, as well as donations from the citizens of the communities that they serve.

The Guardian Center interviews children and provides advocacy services for families experiencing sexual abuse. In 2018 the Center interviewed 184 children between the ages of three to eighteen. 98% of those children interviewed knew their abuser. The Guardian Center serves the southern Illinois counties of Crawford, Edwards, Gallatin, Lawrence, Richland, Saline, Wabash and White. Their mission statement is, “The Guardian Center is committed to the protection and healing of abused children and their families.”

If you are interested in volunteering, please call (618) 382-8247. The Guardian Center is currently looking for board of director members from Wabash and Saline counties. If you have a passion for helping protect children and advocating on their behalf, this may be a position for you.
