It’s unclear at this point what inmate Kenneth Corbett was thinking when White County Sheriff’s authorities say he set his shirt and blanket on fire within his housing cell at the White County Jail overnight. Officers say it was about 20 after 3 Thursday morning when they responded to Corbett banging on his cell door. A fire extinguisher was utilized to put out the flames, though the Carmi Fire Department was called in to help clear smoke from the jail cell.
Officers found a small cigarette lighter in the cell.
Kenneth Corbett is behind bars on an original charge of criminal damage from the Norris City Police Department. The Sheriff is forwarding the report to State’s Attorney Denton Aud for possible additional charges related to the incident.
