Governor Rauner Appoints Sadzi Martha Oliva to a Five-Year Term as ICC Commissioner

Effective January 17, 2017, Governor Bruce Rauner has appointed Sadzi Martha Oliva to a five-year term at the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). Pending confirmation of the Illinois Senate, Acting Commissioner Oliva will become the ICC’s first Latina Commissioner.

“Ms. Oliva’s comprehensive legal background and proven record of public service make her well equipped for this role,” said ICC Chairman Brien Sheahan. “As the first Latina to serve, this historic appointment exemplifies Governor Rauner’s continued commitment to diversity and makes Illinois one of the most diverse public utility commissions in the country. I’m proud to serve alongside my colleagues.”

Prior to her appointment, Acting Commissioner Oliva served as General Counsel for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), where she previously served as Ethics Officer, Administrative Law Judge and Chief of Medical Prosecutions. She also worked at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services as the Chief Administrative Law Judge, and chaired the Illinois Governor’s Office Administrative Hearings Review Committee. Acting Commissioner Oliva earned a JD from Loyola University School of Law and a BA from DePaul University and, in addition to multiple volunteer roles, is a member of the Cuban-American Chamber of Commerce of Illinois.

“I’m honored to have been selected by Governor Rauner for this role,” said Acting Commissioner Oliva. “I look forward to helping ensure a fair and effective balance between the interests of Illinois consumers and public utilities, energy suppliers, and transportation companies.”

The ICC has five Commissioners, one of whom is designated as Chairman by the Governor. Each Commissioner is appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Illinois State Senate for a five-year term. Click here to view the full Commissioner listing on the ICC’s website.
