Fourth of July
Thursday marks Independence Day, July 4th, the day set aside each year to celebrate our independence from Great Britain. The day has been celebrated with family outings, picnics and of course fireworks.
There will be no shortage of fireworks around Southern Illinois this Thursday, expanding into the weekend in some locations.
Here in Carmi, the Carmi Lions Club will host their annual Car Show at the White County Fairground Thursday. The day will include a number of activities along with the car show, that includes food and of course the trophy awards to the top vehicles.
Fireworks will be held at dusk at the fairgrounds. Local residents are reminded there will be special traffic patterns following the fireworks display. Details of those traffic plans will be forthcoming from Carmi Chief of Police Jason Carter on later newscast this week. Enfield will also host a fireworks display Thursday night.
Wayne County will host fireworks Thursday at Southwest Park, also beginning at dusk. Wayne City plans to host the Firecracker Classic Saturday night at the Wayne County Speedway. Pits open at 4, grandstand opens at 5 with hot laps set for 6:15 and racing to get underway at 7 p.m. There will be free grandstand admission with fireworks planned during intermission.
Equality in Gallatin County will be hosting the Firecracker Festival Thursday at Cardinal Park, there will be fair food and live music. The Reunion Band with special guest Ridge Chappel will perform at 5, with the fireworks show set for dusk. There will be free flags for the first 60 kids to sing the National Anthem. There will also be fireworks at the Shawneetown City Park Thursday evening.
Hamilton County will host fireworks Thursday night at Lake McLeansboro.
There will be a daylong celebration at Mt. Vernon Outland Airport as Mt. Vernon presents a Salute to Freedom. Gates open at 5.
Eldorado and Harrisburg will host fireworks in Saline County. The Eldorado display will be held at the high school. The Harrisburg fireworks will be held at the Saline County Fairgrounds.
