Carmi Woman Arrested on Concealment of a Deceased Person Charge; Court Finds Bona Fide Doubt to Fitness

A grisly discovery in Carmi Monday prompted by a wellness check requested by the local post office has landed a 59-year-old Carmi woman in jail.  White County Coroner Chris Marsh says he was dispatched to 105 Shipley Monday morning for a deceased individual.  Carmi Police were also sent to the address to check on 77-year-old Nancy Fowler who post office employees said they hadn’t seen in at least a month.  Upon arrival, officials say the daughter of Nancy Fowler, Dawn who also lived in the house told them her mother was in the house but sleeping due to sleeping meds.  Officers would enter to verify she was alright and say they found deplorable conditions and a strong odor.  After gearing up in Personal Protective Equipment, they found Fowler inside.  Officers placed Dawn Fowler in custody and she’s facing charges of Concealing the Death of a Person, Forgery, and Obstruction of Justice.  Fowler was in court Tuesday morning for a first appearance where the court says they found bona fide doubt as to her fitness.  Carmi Police say the investigation is ongoing.  Marsh says an autopsy on Nancy Fowler has been scheduled for Wednesday in Springfield to determine a cause of death and to attempt to find out just how long she’s been deceased.
