Three new pieces of equipment are expected to make a big difference primarily for rural folks in the 210 square miles the Carmi Fire Department covers. Chief Daniel Ballard says thanks to a $220,000 gift from the Absher Charitable Foundation, the department was able to purchase three new pieces of equipment that will help personnel fight blazes in areas that the department has trouble getting large equipment to. Among the new equipment are two trucks, a 2025 Chevy 3500 outfitted with a QTAC skid unit and 250 gallon water tank, a 2025 Chevy 2500 with a 125 gallon water tank and trailer to haul a 2024 Can Am Defender side by side with 85 gallon tank. Ballard would go on to say the Absher Foundation’s generosity will “allow us to provide substantial fire suppression in remote and rural areas.” The new equipment will benefit not only the immediate Carmi area but also service the region when called upon for mutual aid.
