If you’re a fan of do overs and you’re a duffer, hacker, or high handicapper on the golf course, this Saturday’s Mulligan Madness scramble is made for you. Bonus, proceeds go towards a worthy cause. Cassie (Hughes) Pigg, a Carmi lifer dropped by Kiwanis Thursday to talk more about the 2nd annual golf scramble to benefit the Spina Bifida Association. The purpose is personal for Pigg.
Everything was good and then we went for our 20 week ultrasound and that’s when we heard about Spina Bifida. So he immediately got referred to Cincinnati Children’s and they operated on him when I was 23 weeks pregnant. So in a span of 3 weeks, we got our diagnosis and our family relocated to Cincinnati and they were operating on my unborn child’s spine.
Noah Pigg is getting ready to turn 5 in September and Pigg calls him a miracle baby and one of the lucky ones. He’s able to run, jump, and do pretty much everything he wants to do. Even though Spina Bifida is the most common birth defect that affects youngsters, it still only impacts about 1,400 children per year in the U.S. Pigg says and that means there’s not a ton of awareness. While there’s no cure, there have been advancements and that’s prompted the Pigg’s to make an effort to raise money for the organization.
Last year was the first event and Pigg says they raised more than $12,000. This Saturday, the community will come together to raise more funds to help the Spina Bifida Association focus on research, clinical care, education, network building, and advocacy. Mulligans are available for $20 each giving a do over for bad golf shots and are unlimited as long as the pace of play isn’t interrupted. There will be a $1,000 Hole in One opportunity, lunch provided, a variety of silent auction items and somebody will win a trip to the 2027 Masters. Space is limited, but Pigg says you can still get in on the action at the Carmi Country Club Saturday. Shotgun starts will take place at 8am and 1pm.
