City of Carmi officials are expecting a crowd at their July 7th Council meeting prompting leaders to move the location. Council Chambers at 225 East Main can only hold about 50 people. The meeting has been moved to the White County Farm Bureau basement at 304 East Robinson Street.
It’s anticipated a large contingent could be in attendance due to the opening of bids on the prospect of selling the municipality’s wastewater treatment plant. At the May 19th meeting, city leaders, representatives of Illinois American Water, an AFSCME Council 31 rep, and more than two dozen onlookers, many of them city employees, debated the issue for about an hour and ten minutes. Since then, many have taken to social media to oppose the issue and/or to urge fellow citizens to reach out to council members to ask questions and make their voice heard. A mailer was also sent out urging residents to oppose the selling of the utility. Bids are scheduled to be opened at the July 7th meeting. A vote isn’t expected until at least July 21st however.
