While it was born in 2024, origins of Amy Lou’s Brews actually steep from the owner’s youth. Amy Funkhouser dropped by Kiwanis Thursday to talk more about her popular mobile coffee truck. She says it was her grandparents who are responsible for planting the seed.
When I was little, my grandparents used to own a drug store. So, my grandma would give me coffee which was mostly just milk with a splash of coffee but I thought it was coffee. That’s where it all began for me.
She says she wasn’t a big coffee drinker growing up unlike teenagers today. She says it wasn’t until after she had kids herself that she bought into the coffee craze.
I started mixing up all kinds of coffees and sharing them with friends and family. They all kept saying ‘why don’t you start a coffee shop’? And I thought no, but one day I mentioned it to my husband and asked about starting a mobile coffee trailer and that one conversation turned into Amy Lou’s.
She says it’s about more than coffee though. Afflicted with social anxiety provides purpose and a guarantee to always try to make sure she’s not just filling a cup, but also every customer’s emotional cup.
I want our customers to be met with a friendly, genuine smile because that might be the only smile they get in their day. If we can bring them one moment of kindness, that one bright spot, we’re doing more than just pouring drinks, we’re pouring into others in our community.
As far as the offerings at her mobile truck, she says they serve espressos, cold brews, dirty sodas, dirty Alani, lotus energy, tea, and lemonade. Additionally, Amy Lou’s Brews also does free delivery to businesses in Carmi on Wednesdays with no minimums. Her most popular drink is the Grandma’s Banana Pudding Cold Brew which she admits may not sound appetizing, but she calls it a dessert in a cup and says it’s based on her grandma’s special occasion recipe. Drinks are also available to go in cans.
