Three Men Arrested by White County Sheriff Deputies

Freddie Swift of Grayville visited the White County Jail on August 13th to inquire about an active warrant. To his surprise, he did have one. The warrant was issued for his Failure to appear in court on the charge of Driving while License Revoked. His original court date was August 12th, but his absence led to the issuance of the warrant. Officers apprehended Swift on the 13th and was promptly brought to court the following day. He was then scheduled for an Arraignment on September 23rd at 9:30 am.

Richard Travelstead of Carmi was the subject of a warrant check on August 14th. A White County Sheriff Deputy, along with a Carmi Police Sergeant and another officer, conducted the check at a residence on Shipley Street in Carmi, just before 8 pm.

A man at the residence, Richard Travelstead, was advised by police of the reason for the warrant. Back in February of 2022, Travelstead was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Unlawful Use of Property. In April, two of Travelstead’s charges were dismissed, and he was sentenced to four years’ probation. While on probation, Travelstead was arrested again on a Theft charge in 2023. During his arrest on Thursday, Travelstead was taken to the White County Jail until a judge could see him. On Monday, Judge Webb scheduled a Resentencing hearing for September 29th at 1 pm.

Also on Thursday, a White County Sheriff Deputy and Sergeant were advised by Sheriff Weiss of a court order to take Zachariah Mitchell into custody and hold him in the White County Jail until an opening with a mental health facility opened up.

While patrolling, the officer noticed a maroon Ford F-150 in Brownsville traveling towards Carmi. The officer ran the registration information and knew it belonged to Wayne Mitchell. Once the Ford and the officer reached the Carmi Golf Course, emergency lights were activated, with the officer attempting to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to stop. Along with the White County Sheriff Deputy, a Sergeant, and the Carmi Police were called in for backup.

The Ford eventually came to a halt in the Walmart parking lot. Despite repeated instructions from multiple law enforcement officers to exit the vehicle, the driver, Zachariah Mitchell, did not comply. Finally, an officer approached the truck, ordered the driver out, and placed him under arrest. Mitchell was then taken to the White County Jail and charged with two citations: Operating a Pickup Truck without Rear Splash Guards and Fleeing/Attempting to Elude a Police Officer.
