The Carmi-White County Girls Basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on the road Tuesday night, falling to Olney in a hard fought battle by a final score of 54-49.
The Lady Bulldogs came out strong and set the tone early, taking a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Carmi continued to battle in a back-and-forth second quarter, but Olney was able to gain a slight edge before halftime, taking a 29-27 lead into the break.
Carmi responded well coming out of the locker room, reclaiming the lead in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs edged ahead 42-41 heading into the final period. However, Olney made the key plays down the stretch, outscoring Carmi 13-7 in the fourth quarter to secure the 54-49 victory.
Caroline Simmons led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points, while Addi Elliott was close behind with 15. Natalie Goemaat added 7 points, Jaya Smith finished with 6, Eva Attebury scored 3, and Torrie Rider chipped in 2.
Despite the strong individual performances, Carmi was hurt by missed opportunities. The Lady Bulldogs missed five crucial free throws and committed 19 turnovers, which proved costly in a tightly contested game.
With the loss, Carmi-White County falls to 10-1 on the season. The Lady Bulldogs will look to bounce back quickly as they return home for a non-conference matchup Thursday night against Robinson.
