Just Landed: Williams Recaps Boston Trip with Student Explorers of CWC Travels

CWC Travels has conquered Washington D.C. and now Boston.  In two years, the group plans to go back to the nation’s capital and will also add a two day trip to the Big Apple.  Jessica Williams, who teaches social studies and health at Carmi-White County High School, has taught for 16 years and just returned from her most recent excursion to Boston with 19 students.  She dropped by Carmi Kiwanis Thursday to recap the trip.  She was accompanied by a half dozen of the 19 (18 CWCHS and 1 NCOE) students who also shared their favorite parts of the experience.

Williams partners with EF (Educational First) Tours to take what students learn in class and let them see those places in real life.  The itinerary which kicked off June 2nd included:

Two years ago, the 2024 trip was largely on the families to come up with funds to pay for the trips.  That prompted Williams to try to come up with a non-profit that could store money from fundraisers to help finance students’ trips.  Those efforts and also 51 sponsors translated into sponsorships Williams was able to give to help kids afford the experience.  That money’s not a straight handout though.  Student explorers earn funds through their efforts.

The kids who help with fundraising are eligible to apply for scholarship money.  We don’t just hand out money because they’re going on the trip.  They have to put in work to receive any type of scholarship.  The scholarships were given out in January this year to apply to their 2026 trip and were able to give them around $8,000 total for their travel.

Williams says planning will soon get underway to begin raising funds for the 2028 trip back to D.C. with an NYC kicker.  Students eligible for the 2028 trip will be in the class of 2028 – class of 2031.
