Grayville Leaders Hear Audit Report; Move Forward on Mural Again; Learn of New Ideas to Improve Cemetery

“Grayville’s in good shape.”  Or at least it has been from an auditor’s perspective for the fiscal year ending April 30th of this year.  Arlynne Davis presented her audit report before the City Council Monday night.  She reported no issues found materially and that the financial statements were reasonable.  The balance sheet for the general fund shows the city in a net positive position.

Total assets at $647,046.  You’ve got liabilities of $104,000.  For fund equity or fund balances and that’s your net assets minus your liabilities and that’s almost $543,000 in the general fund.  That’s a good spot.

The profit/loss statement shows revenues of a little more than $2.2 million.  Expenditures were at just over $2 million leaving an excess of $237,000 for the year.

Also Monday night, several members of the public were in attendance in support of Penny Pritchett’s efforts at Grayville’s Oak Grove Cemetery.  A bit of a miscommunication resulted in a hitch in the giddy up of the 12 x 15 mural planned for Oak Grove Cemetery.  It turned out to simply be a procedural malfunction and it was quickly righted.  Mayor Travis Thompson explains.

It was agreed to that the mural would be put on the building at the cemetery when we voted on it a couple months back.  [Commissioner] Don [Baldwin] was not at the meeting prior because he was in Buffalo.  He’s here today and stated he told Penny to put the board up.  In order for that to happen, we have to vote that that’s what we want to happen because it’s the city’s cemetery.  So, we are going to vote on whether we put the mural on the board if that makes sense.

Commissioners and the mayor also heard from resident Beth Green.  She’s in the early stages of a concept she’s hoping others will participate in to help give a greater impact at the cemetery and centered on preservation.

I want it to be a matching gift opportunity because I think there are many, many people across this country that would be willing to put in a donation to the cemetery especially if I matched it dollar for dollar.  My priority is more on the preservation side of things…to plant new trees, restore old trees, cut down diseased trees, but it could expand to working on Civil War monuments if we could find appropriate government guidelines on how to do that.  I’ve even thought of something as far as a way to maybe clean up some of the tombstones.

Green will meet with the cemetery committee to see about moving forward on that opportunity.

The Grayville Ministerial Association was approved for bell ringing at the main 4 way intersection in town from 8am – 11am on December 6th.

The council also approved a lift station quote for a pump at Road Ranger.  It is reportedly limping by and could last a month or 6 months, so commissioners decided to approve the purchase at $8,496 but to hold off until it’s needed with the hope that it lasts until the actual purchase can be put into the budget for next year.

And finally, commissioners authorized what should be one of the last pay estimates to close out the water main replacement project.  Engineer Rex Grunloh updated the council saying it was complete besides final walkthroughs and final fixes.

Council adjourned at 7:44pm.
