Grayville Police Chief Mason Siegel says every child in the town who was identified as being someone who could benefit from either the Tina’s Wish or Hometown Heroes Shop with a Cop program will be taken care of this year. And thanks to a new initiative, they’re getting a headstart on next year. Siegel talked about the program at Monday night’s Grayville Council meeting.
That is going well. We do have the trees up at the depot. As of right now, we have 12 individuals and businesses who purchased trees. All of the proceeds from that will benefit Shop with a Cop predominantly for next year as we already have the funds for this year. We’ll be taking 13 kids shopping this year. All of the kids that were presented to us from the school will either be with Tina’s Wish or Shop with a Cop. So every single family that sent in an application for help are going to receive help. Quite a blessing this year.
In his November report, Siegel says his department handled 170 calls for service resulting in 5 investigations, 4 arrests, 5 citations, and 6 written warnings.
Also Monday night, leaders moved forward with a lift station alarm system after reviewing two quotes. One quote came in at $12,000 per lift station and was quickly dispatched in favor of a quote from K&M Specialty Pumps that will outfit ten of the city’s lift stations with beacons and alarms at a total investment of $15,230.
Beyond that, leaders agreed to a pair of quotes for a new door lock system at the front of city hall. Felt’s Lock and Alarm will be paid $2,405.24 and PC Doctors $389.75 for upgrades which will make it possible for city employees to clock in/out in the well lit vestibule of city hall.
Finally, commissioners wrangled with moving up Sunday sales of liquor from noon to 10am at the request of The Smokin’ Pig. Jay Walden, the city attorney for 37 years says commissioners shouldn’t take the request lightly.
Sunday liquor sales has been a sore point for that entire time and you want to make sure that you give this community an opportunity to come and express their concerns. You do not want to act and then have to back up the train because of that. It may be fine with everyone. He mentioned you can go buy marijuana at the dispensary, but you can’t get alcohol. Well, we don’t have any control over that. It’s irrelevant to the whole thing. That’s my one statement as city attorney having done this a long time. You want to make sure people are aware of the possible change and that they have a chance for input.
Commissioners agreed and moved forward with just having Walden drafting an ordinance and give residents an opportunity to provide input at a future meeting. Council adjourned at 7:15pm.
