Council Approves Sale of 1952 International; Agrees to Demolition Bid; Plans Ongoing for 50th Airport Celebration

Carmi City Council is rid of a 1952 International L-162 after a bid from Bryce Nolan.  That was one of just a handful of decisions made at Tuesday night’s regular meeting.  At the March 24th gathering, leaders opened sealed bids for excess equipment.  The truck received no bids at that meeting.  Since then, Nolan stepped up to offer $500 for the purchase of the vehicle prodding Council to consider the offer.  After estimating the value of scrapping the truck, alderpersons unanimously approved the sale to Nolan.

Council also received two bids to demolish the property at 121 Woodlawn Avenue.  A bid from B4 Land Management in West Salem came in at just under $14,000 while Guisewhite out of Mt. Carmel offered to do the job for $9,875 winning favor with leaders.

Beyond that, Council approved moving the November 3rd meeting to the previous day in observance of Election Day.  The gathering will still be held at 5:30pm in Council Chambers at 225 East Main Street.

After resolutions to close a grant checking account, and the alley between the Webb Hay House and “The Castle” from May 8th at 6am – May 9th at 11:59pm, council heard reports from Mayor Stendeback and standing committees prior to recessing into executive session.

Stendeback’s reports included that the Sycamore Street project is underway.  He also says water meter replacements are nearly completed.  He expects the city to purchase a collecting system that will in fact monitor meters the mayor hopes will help residents cut down or identify leaks more quickly than are currently being found.  In addition, Stendeback also says festivities surrounding the 50th anniversary for the Carmi Airport are on pace.  The event is planned for June 6th.  Tethered hot air balloons will be on site, a potential flyover is being considered as is a breakfast fly in to encourage as many aircraft as possible.  The public will be welcome and encouraged to attend.

Alderman Doug Hays says police qualification testing is only good for a couple years and to maintain a quality applicant pool, the department plans to hold POWER testing on June 13th.

Council recessed to consider summer personnel additions at 5:45pm.  Following executive session, the board hired 6 lifeguards and 4 to seasonal positions.

Carmi leadership will next gather on Cinco de Mayo.
