Carmi Township Swears in Members, and Talks Roof Repairs

Some familiar faces and new faces for the Carmi Township board.

The members, dedicated to serving the Carmi Township, were sworn in this week. Township Supervisor Pam Deig, Tammy Coale as the new Clerk, Amy Edwards as Assessor, and Chris McEwing as Township Road Commissioner have all secured their positions for another term. Township Trustees Mike Baxley and Brad Chapman continue their service, with new members Shelly Buchanan and Tim Scates joining to fill the two remaining trustee positions.

The roof at the Township building is in need of repairs, much like the Carmi Police Station, which is a flat metal roof.

Township Supervisor Pam Deig explained that the roof has been patched numerous times, but unfortunately, the problem persists, as new areas continue to leak water.

“Flat roof, has a very low pitch, and then on the sides, there is a, there are steel beams, you know, the frame that goes around those are still, that was framed in. And then down below, the water’s sitting and they have chicken wire or some type of fence up through there to try and keep debris out that we have to clean off all the time.”

Deig already has one quote, but she wanted to bring the matter to the board to gather more bids. She will also contact the Township insurance, TORMA, to see if they would cover the damage and/or repairs.

Another item brought to the board was the option of adjusting the grant application process. The amount set aside for the grant will remain at $5,000; however, the recipients will change.

“If you’ve applied the last 12 months and received money, then you have to wait for 12 months to apply again from the time you receive the grant.”

The idea was approved.

Moving on to Road Commissioner McEwing, he informed the members that he had not collected quotes to fix up the road building. But McEwing did share that the project on Sycamore Street will begin this summer, as will oiling and chipping the roads.

Trustee Mike Baxley asked about a bill the Township received from O’Reilly’s. McEwing stated he would look into it and make sure it wasn’t a personal cost charged to the Township.

Lastly, Deig went over the General and Emergency Assistance for the month of April. A total of $3,512 was distributed to individuals and families in need of assistance with their bills.

The next Township meeting will be held on June 10 at 6:00 p.m.
