Carmi Township Sets Special Meeting to Appoint New Trustee

Carmi Township officials will gather for a special meeting Wednesday evening with the purpose being to nominate and appoint a vacant Trustee seat.  At the September 9th meeting, Trustee Michael Baxley who also serves as County Treasurer, announced his intention to resign from the board saying he was just too busy doing the county treasurer job.  He was elected to the position in April of this year.  At that meeting, Baxley recommended the board appoint Chula Fleming to the post.  Since then, there have been rumors surrounding the potential appointment of Cheyenne Long.

A local reporter, Kathy Sands of the Villagers Voice, says she’s been in touch with Greg Stewart, the Township attorney, and says he told her he was looking into whether she could be appointed.  Stewart allegedly indicated he would be checking into Long’s signature on the nominating petition for Chris Pollard to ensure her name was there and to check with election officials on whether a signature on a petition would satisfy the requirements of the appointee being of the same political party as the individual who resigned.

The meeting is scheduled for 6pm at the town hall, 304 South Church Street.
