The Carmi Township members met Tuesday night briefly, approving only one agenda item.
Road Commissioner Chris McEwing addressed the board to make a donation to the SIC Diesel Mechanic class for their help in repairing one of the trucks. McEwing estimated that the work would have cost over $5,000 if he had taken it to a commercial garage. He recommended making a $2,500 donation. Supervisor Pam Deig decided that half of the Road budget and half of the Town budget would cover the donation.
The 2026-2027 tentative budget was presented and will be available for public review for the next 30 days before the Township’s June meeting. The total Town appropriations will be $493,503, and the Road appropriation will be $816,800. Deig noted that the increase in the Road budget was attributed to the additional revenue the Road district will need in the future. With the budget on display, the June Township meeting was moved to June 16 at 6.
Employee healthcare discussions dominated the meeting, with no new information provided. Deig reported ongoing work with Matt Healy, their healthcare representative, to gather quotes and an Rx plan. Deig stated that Healy will join a future meeting to discuss more about the options the Township has. Trustee Brad Chapman asked about a potential intergovernmental agreement for shared insurance companies, but that doesn’t appear to be a foreseeable option for the Township.
The Township hopes to become more involved with the City/County Dog Pound. Deig explained that she will meet with Mayor Stendeback soon and attend the next Pets at Risk meeting in June to learn more.
Lastly, in April, the General Assistance expenditure was $2,736, including $668.78 for utilities, $497 for shelter, and $1,570 for personal assistance. Deig noted positive progress for two individuals who came off General Assistance.
The next Township board meeting will be held on June 16 at 6 pm.
