Early Sunday morning, White County Dispatch received a call about an overturned car off of Highway 1 north of Carmi. The White County Sheriff’s Department and White County Ambulance Service both responded to the scene shortly after 5:30 am. The driver of the crashed vehicle, Joseph Buttry of Carmi was seriously injured and barely responsive when authorities reached him. Buttry was transported to Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
From evidence at the scene, Buttry’s vehicle was travelling north on Highway 1 when for unknown reasons, left the road across the southbound lane, struck an embankment, became airborne, and landed upside down about 270 feet away after overturning several times. The time of the accident is unknown at this time, but the report noted that the engine was cold. Due to foggy weather and the distance from the road the car came to rest, the car was not able to be seen until dawn.
