Carmi City Council Grants Zoning Ordinance, Agrees to Fund Fireworks, More from 4-19-22

The City of Carmi will once again have one of southeastern Illinois’ best fireworks shows this July.  Carmi City Council agreed to continue their support at Tuesday’s meeting, upping their donation from $9,000 to $10,000 due to the increasing cost of the pyrotechnic extravaganza.  Chamber Executive Director Kelly Northcott explains…

Additionally, Council amended a zoning ordinance for resident Michael Serafini who plans to construct a building at 637 Oak Street that will serve as a training center for volleyball, basketball, and softball primarily.  Serafini says he wanted to build a facility that directly helps girls sports in the community.

Serafini was able to address concerns over parking and the ordinance was unanimously passed.

Other items on the agenda included approving a pay request from Kiefer Brothers Construction for the 7th Street Sanitary Sewer Project.  Mayor Pollard says the $158,553 will come from the $327,000 the city was given through the American Rescue Plan Act.  Nancy J. Winter was re-appointed to the Police Pension Fund Board for a two year term.  Council also amended an ordinance updating available designated depositories for the City.  Pollard explains…

Among the local companies being added include First National Bank of Allendale, Cornerstone Wealth, State Farm Bank, First Financial, and Edward Jones.  Those are in addition to the other banks in the community including Peoples National Bank, First Mid, Banterra, and First Bank.

Greg Brown, the airport manager, updated Council on their new agreement with Aeroptic…

The Maryland based company will be working in the precision ag industry for the next 3 years.  Brown says racing is also coming back to the airport beginning May 14th and he expects it to grow exponentially over last year.

It was also announced Councilwoman Sheila Headlee had been life flighted earlier in the day Tuesday.  Concern was centered around whether she’d had a blood clot or a heart attack.  The council as well as WROY/WRUL wish her a speedy recovery.
