The Carmi City Council met Tuesday for their first meeting of October. Boy Scouts from Troop 342 were in attendance as part of their Citizenship component.
The Council unanimously approved a request from Chamber of Commerce Director Holly Healy to hold the lighted Christmas parade November 25th at 6 pm. Healy stated that the parade will follow the same route as years past. The Council also approved the closure of South Main Street from Main to the alley from November 15th to January 5th for placement of the Santa House and Christmas Train.
City Attorney Greg Stewart was authorized by the Council to prepare and execute a new deed for St. Polycarp Cemetery. Mayor Jeff Pollard announced that the church had paid for a re-survey done and the new deed would correct errors in the original.
Unanimous approval was given to place a trailer-mounted Sludge Mate de-watering unit up for bid. The equipment was purchased in 2011, and had only been used a handful of times. The minimum bid for the unit will be $35,000.
In his report, Mayor Pollard congratulated the winners of the Large and Small Businesses of the Year and the Carmi Citizen of the Year announced at Monday’s Chamber dinner and reminded residents that traffic re-routing for Corn Days will begin at 3pm on Friday the 13th. He also reminded residents about the upcoming Halloween activities at Burrell’s Woods, and the City’s first Trunk or Treat.
Pollard also said that if residents had limbs on their property due to Frontier cutting trees around their lines, that they should contact Frontier about clean up instead of the City.
The Council went into executive session at 5:42 pm, and unanimously agreed that the City will foreclose on the Phoenix Foundation, seeking repayment of funds after a new hospital never materialized.
The Carmi City Council will meet again on Tuesday, October 17th at 5:30.
