Bullpups Drop Season Opener in Extra Innings

The Carmi-White County Junior High Baseball team traveled to Salem on Monday for their first game of the season, and the Bullpups fell by a final score of 11-10 in 8 innings.

Carmi got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. Tyson May got the scoring started with an RBI triple, followed by an RBI single from Will Lamont to give the Bullpups an early advantage.

The Bullpups added another run in the 2nd inning when Sam Lynn delivered an RBI single, extending Carmi’s lead to 5-0.

Salem answered in a big way in the bottom of the 2nd. A combination of walks and errors allowed the Wildcats to put together a 6-run inning and take their first lead of the game at 6-5. Salem added three more runs in the 3rd inning to push its lead to 9-5.

But the Bullpups didn’t go away. Carmi was able to cut the Salem lead to just one after an RBI single by May, an RBI double by Jerrick Rager, and an RBI single by Gage Whetstone to make it a 9-8 ballgame.

The Bullpups continued their comeback in the 5th inning. Jack Taylor was able to score on an error on a ground ball hit by Lynn, allowing Carmi to tie the game at 9-9.

Salem regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the 6th, putting the Bullpups down 10-9 heading into the final inning.

Down to their final out in the top of the 7th, Carmi once again found a way to come through. Beckam Moore scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of May, tying the game at 10-10. May’s 4th RBI of the game.

The game headed to extra innings tied at 10-10.

Carmi was unable to score in the top of the 8th, going down 1-2-3 and Salem was able to win it on a walk-off wild pitch in the home half of the inning to complete the 11-10 comeback victory.

Tyson May went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Bennett Moore went 1-for-5 with a run scored.
Sam Lynn went 1-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Jerrick Rager went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Will Lamont went 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.
Gage Whetstone went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Bullpups start the season with an 0-1 record. They’ll be back in action on Wednesday when they host Hamilton County and then they will travel to Mt. Vernon, IL on Thursday.
